Hot-air balloon flights in the Dambulla–Kandalama area usually begin early in the morning. The balloon rises with the wind, giving a peaceful view over forests, reservoirs, villages, paddy fields and the wider Cultural Triangle. Depending on the route and visibility, views towards Sigiriya may be possible.

A balloon does not follow a fixed road or railway. Its flight path depends on wind direction and speed, so every morning can be slightly different. A typical flight is around one hour, while the complete experience takes longer because of early arrival, safety briefing, launch and landing arrangements.

The main operating season is generally around November to April, although exact operating dates depend on the operator and weather conditions. Early morning is preferred because wind and weather conditions are often more suitable for ballooning.

Ballooning is weather dependent. Wind, rain, visibility and other safety conditions are assessed before launch. The pilot/operator has the final decision to delay, cancel or reschedule a flight when conditions are not suitable.
